Ravensara oil should not be confused but often is with ravintsara oil, the essential oil obtained from the species Cinnamomum camphora. Ravensara oil is a yellowish to greenish yellow easily mobile liquid, which has an aromatic, phenolic to spicy anise odor. In ravensara oils from various origins, over 95 chemicals have been identified. A full literature review of the qualitative and quantitative composition of commercial and non-commercial ravensara oils of various origins, their chemotypes and with data from the ISO standard, has been published in 2016. There have been two case reports of allergic contact dermatitis from ravensara oils only, both in an occupational setting, in an aromatherapist and a complementary therapist. An aromatherapist had occupational contact dermatitis with allergies to multiple essential oils used at work, including ravensara oil. A female 'complementary therapist' developed occupational contact dermatitis from a multitude of essential oils used at work, including ravensara oil.
