ABSTRACT

Preparation of complexes, metal carbonyls and organometallic compounds is just an addition of a slight excess of ligands to soluble salt of the metal but lot of problems are encountered in its isolation. Covalent complexes are soluble in non-polar solvents. The experimental methods generally used for the preparation of complexes are of very simple nature. Regarding the preparation of square planar complexes, it was observed that certain ligands easily replace the groups in the trans-position. Ferrocene can react like any other aromatic compound without any harm to metal-ligand bond. Preparation of complex is very simple. A metal salt solution is taken in aqueous medium and a slight excess of the ligand is added. For preparation of organometallic compounds cyclopentadiene is treated with alkali metal to form the salt which in turn is reacted with transition metal salt in a suitable solvent.
