ABSTRACT

The impacts of Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on the fisheries and aquaculture food systems vary and the situation is rapidly evolving. The lockdowns implemented by some countries have resulted in logistical difficulties in seafood trade, particularly in relation to transportation and border restrictions. The salmon industry, in particular, suffered from increased air freight costs and cancellation of flights. Fishing activities have decreased in both artisanal and industrial sectors during the pandemic. Effects on aquaculture have varied with regions, species, markets and financial capacity of farms. The main adverse effects are for producers supplying the food services sector, e.g. hotels, restaurants and catering. A lack of monitoring and enforcement may encourage a less responsible level of management, monitoring and control of fishing operations and there is a risk that levels of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing will increase. Fish and fish products are a key component to a healthy diet and are safe to eat.
