ABSTRACT

Fisheries sector plays an important role in the Indian economy. It contributes to the national income, exports, food, nutritional security and employment generation. The sector is important in the socio-economic development providing livelihood to around 1.6 crore number of people. The country is on its way to fully harness the potential of fisheries. Fish Production in India showed tremendous growth in the past seven decades. The total fish production of India increased from 7.52 lakh tonnes in 1950-51 to 125.9 lakh tonnes in 2017-18. The contribution of import of fisheries products to the all-commodity import segment of India is very much negligible. Imported seafood is one of the upcoming promising trade of seafood business which is gradually picking up. Modern trade comprises of supermarkets, hypermarkets, large format chain of stores which cater to all kinds of household needs right from food, non-food and apparels.
