ABSTRACT

Fish is the most important source of animal protein for the human population, it is rich in protein and essential amino acids. Aquaculture not only supplies dietary essentials for human consumption, but provides excellent opportunities for employment and income generation, especially in the more economically backward rural areas. Aquaculture is currently one of the fastest growing food production systems in the world. The main activity in the Indian aquaculture sector is the production of freshwater carp and brackish water shrimp. Aquaculture refers to the long history of fish culture in Asia, ancient Egypt and central Europe. The history of aquaculture projects all over the world has led to the conclusion that the right selection of sites is probably the most important factor in determining the feasibility of viable operations. Extensive aquaculture involves low degree of control over environment, nutrition, predators, competitors, and disease-causing agents.
