ABSTRACT

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) started its operations in India in 1948. Management of water and natural resources, crops, livestock, food security information systems and fisheries comprise the major part of the work under FAO partnership. The policy goals of the government of India have been strengthened by the FAO activities in fisheries sector by addressing sustainability and inclusiveness needs of the sector. The Bay of Bengal program (BOBP) is the regional fisheries flagship program of FAO based in Chennai, India. Transboundary cooperation and enhancement of India’s contribution to global public goods, including facilitating India’s sharing of expertise with other developing countries in the areas of agriculture and rural development. The Bay of Bengal Large Marine Ecosystem (BOBLME) project will provide regional mechanisms for planning, coordination, monitoring, knowledge management, programme coordination, partnership arrangements and inter-sectoral coordination for fisheries.
