ABSTRACT

Chromosomes contain the genetic material that is responsible for maintaining reproductive barriers as well as integrity of species and thus, play an important role as the source of comparative data in taxonomy. Chromosomes give information about the biological basis of relationships among taxa. The chromosome number is considered as an important taxonomic character. The chromosome number in some taxa is in exact multiple of the base number. Cytogenetics is of importance to taxonomy firstly because chromosome number, structure and behavior often have taxonomic value in the same manner as any other morphological character. Chromosome number, size and structural features together constitute the karyotype. The information contained within karyotypes can be refined by the use of banding patterns on the chromosomes. Based on karyotype analysis they categorized the species into three clusters and found that the infrageneric classification based on morphological data is not congruent with cytological data and needs to be revised.
