ABSTRACT

Biomass is the collective name for a variety of natural-occurring “renewable materials” of biological origin which includes (1) energy crops grown specifically to be used as fuel, such as wood or various grasses, (2) agricultural residues and by-products, such as straw, sugarcane fiber, rice hulls, animal waste, and (3) residues from forestry, construction, and other wood-processing industries.

This chapter presents a look into the future insofar as the refinery of the future will probably utilize non-fossil feedstocks and comment on the use and the production of products from biomass which can act as a feedstocks for products and chemicals either in the single processing mode or in the co-processing mode.
