ABSTRACT

The Ontario Chiefs of Police Association awarded Doug the Media Officer of the Year Award and shortly after transferred him to the Uniform Division. Confused, he spoke with a senior officer, who advised, “You were a casualty of your success.” Angry and confused, he went to his new platoon and took every effort to win over the officers. Here he was presented with valuable professional life lessons when a young female officer, Jennifer Kovach, was killed in a motor vehicle accident while on patrol. As part of the Chief’s Colour Party, Doug and his team quickly learned the police ceremonial funeral process, and the eyes of all of Canada were upon their small city. Resiliency skills learned through his EAP counselling fuelled his every movement and interaction during this horrific, devastating, and stressful time.
