ABSTRACT

In this chapter, SWOT analysis is discussed as a strategic planning technique for monitoring allocation of the resources in the best possible way to achieve optimum productivity. Introduced in the 1950s, SWOT analysis is primarily used for acquiring information on which strategy for planning of a project can be developed. SWOT is an acronym for four parameters, viz., strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Strengths and weaknesses are internal factors, while opportunities and threats are external factors for an organization. Presentation of SWOT analysis is normally done on one page segmented into four rectangles for each factor. Internal factors are outlined first followed by external factors. SWOT analysis process has been deliberated with a typical example. Advantages and limitations of SWOT analysis have been deliberated. This chapter ends with some applications of SWOT analysis technique in government, nongovernment organizations as well as in individual setups.
