ABSTRACT
Starting with the modern trends in electrical ship propulsion, this chapter covers the Azimuth Z- and pod-drives, propulsion power system configurations, separate and integrated electrical power systems, advantages of electric propulsion for cruise and navy ships, AC vs. DC power options, optimum voltage level selection, propulsion power requirement, ship speed vs. fuel consumption, and electric propulsion for hybrid tugboat and ferry.
