ABSTRACT

The newly imposed ship emission regulations are the subject of this chapter. It presents the key ship emissions and air pollutants, marine emission regulations, and means of ship emission reductions, such as low-sulfur fuel, speed reduction, cold ironing, using liquefied natural gas (LNG), and using snubbers. The chapter continues with emerging clean power technologies that can be used on ships to meet the new emission requirements. It includes various types of fuel cells and their use in navy, military, and merchant ships, lithium-ion batteries, solar photovoltaic cells and their performance in various sun intensities and temperatures, and the wind power.
