ABSTRACT

As shown in the three preceding chapters, artificial intelligence (AI) has a wide range of potential positive and negative impacts on the various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Leaving it at that is, however, not sufficient, as we must also summarize and try to get to grips with the overall impact of AI. In order to do so, this chapter returns to the main impacts discussed in the preceding chapters and considers how large of an impact AI can be considered to have on the SDGs. Furthermore, the question of how likely the purported impacts are to have significant real-life effects is considered. This goes both for the kind of isolated use cases discussed by other researchers and for the hypothetical and theoretically based potential impacts discussed throughout this book.
