ABSTRACT

Cementitious materials are the most widely used in the building industry all over the world. However, deterioration is inevitable even since in the very beginning of the service life. In addition, maintenance and repair work—which are often labor- and capital-intensive—follows. In recent times, production of sustainable concrete via self-healing technology became useful in construction industries worldwide. Thus, self-healing of the affected cementitious materials is of great importance. The self-healing phenomenon in cementitious materials has been noticed and studied for a long time. This chapter focuses to provide details about the self-healing materials and their effect on concrete performance. The types of self-healing materials, advantages, and disadvantages widely reviewed and discussed.
