ABSTRACT

In this chapter, Monographs are presented of all non-fragrance chemicals and substances that have, by their presence in cosmetic products, caused allergic contact dermatitis. The mode of data collecting and criteria for inclusion have been discussed in Chapter 1. The literature search has resulted in the identification of 497 non-fragrance ingredients in cosmetics that have caused contact allergy / allergic contact dermatitis. Eight-two of these cosmetic allergens have also caused immediate-type reactions, either from their presence in cosmetics or in non-cosmetic products (Chapter 3, table 3.2). Sixty-five of the 497 have also caused photosensitivity reactions, mostly photocontact allergy or photoallergic contact dermatitis, virtually always from their presence in sunscreen products and other cosmetics (Chapter 4, table 4.1).
