ABSTRACT

The choice of crops and cultivars is one of the deciding factors governing the outcome from greenhouse production system and various points like agro-ecological constraints, technological developments and socio-economic opportunities must be taken into consideration while taking protected cultivation as commercial venture. The choice of crops and varieties for protected cultivation is considered as basic variable that affect the success and economic gain from production programme significantly. Good Agricultural Practices for protected cultivation also recommend the best choice of genotypes as priority factor to harness the full potential of greenhouse technology. Vegetable crops, cut flowers, ornamentals and even few fruit crops may be important for cultivation under protected environments, but geographical adaptation of a particular crop may not necessarily guarantee the success of that crop under protected environment because of climatic factors as well as technological reasons.
