ABSTRACT

An irrigation system must be designed to apply precise amount of water to satisfy crop requirements each day throughout the year. The water requirement of plants depends on the crop type, region, growing season, weather conditions and the operating efficiency of heating or ventilation system inside the greenhouse. Water needs varies with medium and is also dependent on soil type, soil mix, size and type of the container or bed. Hand watering is the most traditional method of irrigation but now-a-days it is uneconomical and time consuming. Hand watering is affordable in such situations where plant density is high as in case of seed beds, pots or an area that dries sooner and requires frequent irrigation. Majority of crops cannot tolerate wet leaf surface and become infected with fungal or bacterial diseases. Such crops require dry foliage to avoid disease infection. Boom watering is most frequently used for raising plug tray seedling.
