ABSTRACT

The cultivation of crops under greenhouse production system is based on two types of growing media: Soil-based growing media and Soil-less media. Most of the greenhouse growers prefer soil based growing media. It is an easiest way to start crop production in greenhouse. The proportion of organic matter should be kept more while using sandy soils as growing media but in case of clay soil, the proportion of sand should be more. Soil based media losses organic matter due to decomposition, so organic matter should be applied periodically. Organic matter at the rate of 5 to 10% of the volume of growing media depending upon the nutrient and drainage status proves to be good. The presence of exchangeable sodium in these soils is very high, which make such soil almost impervious to water. Acidic soils can be ameliorated with liming materials like ground lime stone (CaCO3), burnt lime (CaO) or hydrated lime Ca(OH)2.
