ABSTRACT

The practice of supplying crops with fertilizers via the irrigation water is called fertigation or Fertigation is a process of application of water soluble fertilizers or liquid fertilizers through irrigation water. The nutrients are applied via fertigation directly into the wetted volume of soil immediately below the emitter where root activity is highly concentrated. The dosage is increased as fruit load and nutrients demand grow and then decreased as plants approach to the end of its crop cycle. This gives plants the needed amount of fertilizers throughout the growth cycle rather than a few large doses. Timing, amounts and concentration of fertilizers applied are easily controlled in fertigation. Fertilizers can be injected into the irrigation system at various frequencies once a day or once every two days or even once or twice a week. The frequency depends upon system design, irrigation scheduling, soil type, nutrients requirement of a crop and the farmers’ preference.
