ABSTRACT

Capsicum commonly known as sweet pepper /bell pepper or Shimla mirch , is a member of the family Solanaceae and considered as luxury vegetable being used in pizza making. Bell pepper has attained a status of high value crop in India in recent years and occupies a pride of place among vegetables in Indian cuisine because of its delicacy and pleasant flavour coupled with rich content of ascorbic acid and other vitamins and minerals. Capsicum growing in India is of recent interest due to high demand for fast food dishes in hotels and modern restaurants. Bell pepper grows best on loam or sandy loam soil with good water holding capacity. Selection of greenhouse sweet pepper cultivars is dependent on colour, disease resistance, performance and yield. A variety of seed companies and distributors offer greenhouse sweet pepper cultivars and the latest cultivars are always subject to change when superior cultivars are developed.
