ABSTRACT

Cucumber and tomato are very important and valuable greenhouse vegetable crops. The availability of predominantly monoecious type cultivars/ hybrids in cucumber necessitates artificial pollination, if grown under greenhouse conditions. The concept of growing cucumber and tomato under greenhouse production system always stipulates training of plants to maximize vertical space utilization under such system. Greenhouse cucumber and tomato plants are generally trained into single stem system through timely and continuous pruning of side shoots or laterals/ or suckers throughout the growing season. Main purpose of training and pruning is to allow maximum interception of light and better air circulation for proper growth and development of plants and is also helpful to reduce risk of fungus and insect problems. Multiplication of greenhouse cucumber and tomato cultivars through side shoot cuttings opens up new dimensions in greenhouse production system.
