ABSTRACT

Direct seeding refers to as planting of a crop with the use of seeds while transplanting is planting with the use of pre-grown seedlings or plants raised from seeds. The term direct seeding, also known as direct sowing, refers to the planting of seeds or vegetative planting materials directly in the soil. Transplanting is also convenient with a few plants that can be transferred with a ball of soil around the roots. Heavy duty mechanical transplanters have been invented for large trees. Direct seeding is a relatively new approach in crop production system. Direct seed cropping systems are characterized by seeding with minimum soil disturbance, retaining most of the crop residues in the soil and extended crop rotations. A drill opens the furrow for planting of seeds. The drill controls seeding depth and must provide good seed-to-soil contact while minimizing soil compaction that might impede seedling emergence. Random seeders meter seed in the row without exact spacing.
