ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 presents the bridge maintenance types and their effects on performance, service life, service life extension and cost. The characteristics and representative types of preventive maintenance (PM), essential maintenance (EM) and replacement (RP) are presented. The relations among the bridge performance, service life, and maintenance at both component-level and system-level are investigated. The maintenance modelings based on the reliability profiles, lifetime functions, damage propagation and event trees are described. The effect of correlation among the service life extensions due to various maintenances on the extended service life of components and systems is investigated. The general process for bridge maintenance consisting of maintenance planning, maintenance application, reporting and evaluating after maintenance, and bridge management systems are presented.
