ABSTRACT

In Chapter 5, general concepts and theoretical background for optimum life-cycle bridge inspection and maintenance planning under uncertainty are presented. The optimum inspection and maintenance planning can be based on the probabilistic life-cycle performance and cost analysis. The objectives for optimum bridge inspection and maintenance planning are formulated based on time-dependent bridge performance, life-cycle cost, damage detection, service life extension, and risk. The multiple objectives can be integrated systematically into multi-objective optimization. In order to find the Pareto optimal solutions of the multi-objective optimization efficiently, the correlation among objectives, identification of essential and redundant objectives, and multi-objective optimization are investigated. The approaches for multi-attribute decision making to select the best Pareto optimal solution are presented.
