ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides a general introduction of the study and briefly explains the background and the rational of this research. It reviews the state-of-the-art of relevant research including the gaps in knowledge that exist and needs to be addressed. The book reviews the relevant literature on (climate) adaptation and provides basic background information on the Opportunistic Adaptation (OA) approach. It introduces the basic features of the method, the framework, as well as the models and evaluation methodology required to address the research questions. The book describes the criteria for the selection of the case study area. It describes the development and application of a novel methodology for evaluating the flexibility of adaptation options. The book explores the use of decision tree diagrams to apply different metrics.
