Toxoplasma gondii Infections in Camels (Camelus spp.)

Data for the past decade are summarized in Table 13.1. All reports were from one-humped camel (Camelus dromedarius) except the report from China ¹²⁸⁸ from the 2-humped camel (Camelus bactrianus). Additionally, infections were detected in camels from zoos. Antibodies were found in 2 of 5 C. dromedarius, ⁸⁵³ 2 of 9 C. bactrianus, ⁸⁵³ and 1 of 9 C. bactrianus ¹⁰¹ in zoos in Czech Republic; prevalences varied greatly, depending on the serological tests, cut-off values, management, function, and geography (Table 13.1). Prevalence increased with age. ²⁰⁶ , ⁴⁸³ , ⁵⁵⁸ , ⁵⁶⁰ This was dramatically evidenced by zero prevalence in 17 camels less than 5-year-old, versus 1.4% in 71, 6–25-year-old, and 6.1% in camels older than 25 years. ¹²⁸⁸ In the same report, prevalence was 0.9% of 102 camels used for transportation versus 10.5% in 19 camels used for agriculture. ¹²⁸⁸
