ABSTRACT

The desktop of the software, its toolbars, and main windows are introduced in this chapter. Interactive calculations with MATLAB® language are studied. Elementary and special mathematical functions, input and output commands, numbers and strings, vectors, matrices and arrays, flow control commands, relational and logical operators are discussed. Each command is presented in its most applicable form and with practical examples. At the end of each subsection, the commands studied in it are applied to elementary engineering calculations, in particular, such as voltage between intermediate points of the Wheatstone bridge, stiffness of a threaded bolt, adhesive force in contact between two spheres, stress state for a rectangular plate with a crack, cuboid lattice cell volume, bulk modulus, and many others.
