ABSTRACT
In the contemporary industrial world, without high-performance lubricants, there would be much more wear, friction, and corrosion leading to a tremendous waste of resources. The role of the lubricant industry on helping to preserve the planet cannot be underestimated. However, the lubricant industry continues to improve their products and production in order to minimize the resources needed to manufacture high-quality products. In the recent years, green lubricants i.e. environmentally acceptable lubricants are increasing considerably in their use and have become an attractive and booming topic. The green lubricants will provide a sustainable future path for new promising applications. Therefore, in this chapter, at the outset the broad classification of lubricants followed by the description of each type of usually used lubricants and their sub-types are detailed. Further, the conceptual realization of advanced lubricants such as ionic liquid, biodegradable, and nano lubricants, and their importance in today's industrial society are addressed in the subsequent sections.
