ABSTRACT

Nowadays, the miniaturization of components is increasing due to which more sophisticated and lighter products are available in the market. These components are the combination of mechanical engineering and electrical engineering. But due to the smaller size of the components, the various forces act on the surface that degrades the life of components. These forces are Van der Waals force, adhesive force, etc. These forces can be reduced by the application of lubricant but due to the size constraint, the bulk lubrication can not be used. To overcome this problem, researchers have suggested self-lubricating coating, bulk solid lubricant coating, surface modification by physical or chemical means, and texture on the surface. These methods can improve the life of the components and also improve the efficiency and reliability of micro/nano devices without affecting the environment. A detailed description of each method is discussed in this chapter.
