ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces different fabrication techniques for microfabrication. The approaches discussed are mostly top-down approaches. They lay down a foundation for readers to understand the different kinds of fabrication approaches that may be used for fabrication of different components for transdermal drug delivery devices like the micropump and microneedles arrays. The conventional photolithography technique is discussed followed by different kinds of etching processes involved in high aspect ratio structure fabrication. The soft moulding technique is also discussed that doesn’t require an expensive cleanroom setup for microfabrication. Comparatively new and innovative techniques like two photon polymerization and the droplet-based air blown technique, particularly useful for microneedle fabrication is presented.
