ABSTRACT

One important lesson from science is that once knowledge has been gained, scientists and the general public rapidly lose interest in how that knowledge was attained. The more research that was carried out on a particular problem by different groups of researchers, often competing and spurring each other on, the more likely the chance for generating new knowledge and advancement. There are frequent disagreements within the scientific community about the best ways to support good science. The US grant system run by the National Institutes of Health is the gold standard for scientific research in the US, whether that science is basic research or more translationally/clinically oriented. Many of discoveries in biomedical research have been translated over the years into an understanding of pathways that have led to the development of new drugs and treatments for numerous illnesses, although it should be noted that some discoveries have yet to provide clear breakthroughs in the realm of clinical medicine.
