ABSTRACT

Starting in this chapter, the emphasis of the textbook shifts from user to system administrator. Here, user accounts are explored from many perspectives. The role of the user account and the group account are examined along with the su command. Next, GUI-based and command-line instructions to create, modify and delete user accounts are covered along with the passwd, group and shadow files. Password control is covered with a look at both the passwd and chage commands along with the PAM utility. The /etc/skel directory is examined along with other tools available to initialize user accounts. The sudo instruction and sudoers file are explained. Creating user account policies is discussed. SELinux is explored.
