ABSTRACT

System administration file commands are explored along with such concepts as partitions and file systems. First, the chapter looks at the types of entities that are treated as files in Linux. Next, the inode is examined and how it is used to locate disk blocks. Several Linux instructions are explored that deal with file systems, notably badblocks, cpio, df, du, dump, exportfs, fdisk, fsck, lvm2, mkfifo, mkfs, mount, parted, restore, stat, umount, tar and xfs_quota. Steps to create partitions and utilize a logical volume manager are covered as are those to establish user quotas. The chapter also explores the top-level Linux directories and their contents in detail.
