ABSTRACT

The scientific novelty and hence the value of solar forecasting are often perceived to be consisted largely in technique. However, housekeeping chores, such as terminology, data cleaning, modeling seasonality, or aggregation of data, must not be perceived as trivial, for these lay the foundation of all subsequent steps. This chapter gives a detailed account of solar forecast software, terminology, data quality-control methods, clear-sky radiation modeling, data aggregation, as well as the operational aspects of solar forecasting. It is thought that these good housekeeping practices are often neglected, and therefore ought to be emphasized, if one wishes to interpret the final forecasting performance with highest confidence.
