ABSTRACT

Chamomile oil may refer either to German chamomile oil obtained from Chamomilla recutita L. Rauschert or to chamomile oil, Roman obtained from Chamaemelum nobile (L.). German chamomile is an important medicinal and aromatic plant of both traditional and modern systems of medicine. Chamomile flowers are still an official drug in the pharmacopoeia of some 20 countries. Both the flowers and the essential oil have been reported to possess anti-inflammatory, spasmolytic, antiseptic, carminative, sedative and ulcer-protecting properties. Compresses and gargles are used externally for the treatment of inflammations and irritations of the skin and mucosa, including the mouth and gums, the respiratory tract and hemorrhoids. In Bulgarian folk medicine, chamomile flower extract is used against insomnia, hysteria, gastritis, headache, stomach pain, for wound epithelialization, gas relief, and as antispasmodic and anti-sweating agent. German chamomile is very commonly utilized to make herbal teas, which are said to relieve spasms and inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, ulcers, and menstrual disorders.
