Cinnamon leaf oil, Sri Lanka type, is the essential oil obtained from the leaves of the cinnamon, Cinnamomum zeylanicum Blume. Cinnamon leaf oil is a light to dark amber clear and mobile liquid, which has a strong spicy odor, reminding of fresh crushed cloves with tender cinnamic notes. The yield of essential oil from the leaves of Cinnamomum zeylanicum Blume generally varies from 1.2 to 1.8%. The main producing countries of this oil are Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Vietnam and the Seychelles. In nearly all analytical studies, eugenol is the major ingredient of cinnamon leaf oils with percentages up to 93.5% of the total oil composition. The members of the International Contact Dermatitis Research Group before 1975 tested 1382 dermatitis patients with cinnamon leaf oil 1% in petrolatum and saw 15 positive reactions; three were also positive to eugenol, the major component of cinnamon leaf oil; relevance is unknown.
