ABSTRACT

Citronella oil, Sri Lanka type, is the essential oil obtained from the aerial parts of the Ceylon citronella, Cymbopogon nardus Rendle. Cymbopogon nardus Rendle, commonly known as citronella grass or Ceylon citronella, is a perennial from the Poaceae grass family, which has stems of 75-300 centimeter (cm) and aromatic leaves 20-60 cm long. Citronella oil Sri Lanka is a pale yellowish to pale brownish, clear mobile liquid which has a floral, rosy warm and slightly woody odor. The ten chemicals that had the highest maximum concentrations in 29 commercial citronella oil Sri Lanka essential oil samples (concentration ranges provided) are the following: geraniol (18.0-48.7%), citronellal (1.0-12%), geranial (0.5-11.3%), camphene (7.0-10.9%), (E)-methylisoeugenol (6.7-10.7%), limonene (3.0-10.4%), (Z)-methylisoeugenol (0.4-9.9%), citronellol (1.7-9.6%), borneol (5.0-7.6%) and methyl eugenol.
