ABSTRACT

Clary sage oil is the essential oil obtained from the flowering tops of the clary, Salvia sclarea L. Quality clary sage oil is preferably made solely from the flowering tops of Salvia sclarea L. but many commercially available oils are produced from the flowering tops and the leaves. Salvia sclarea L., commonly known as clary sage or clary, is a biennial or short-lived herbaceous perennial, which reaches 0.9 to 1.2 meters in height and is one of the most valuable aromatic plants of the temperate region. Fresh leaves of the clary sage are sometimes used in soups, and in the Middle Ages the seeds were used for clearing vision, from which it received its popular name, ‘clary’, or ‘clear eye’. Clary sage oil is a mobile, clear and colorless to light yellowish or light brown liquid which has a fresh herbaceous, soft floral to woody ambery changing odor.
