ABSTRACT

Clove bud oil is the essential oil obtained from the buds of the clove Syzygium aromaticum (L.). Cloves, the aromatic dried flower buds of the clove tree, are used as a spice in virtually all of the world’s cuisine, either whole or in ground form. In Indonesia, cloves are smoked in cigarettes known as ‘kreteks’, which typically contain 60% tobacco and 40% ground cloves. Clove essential oils are widely used and well known for their medicinal properties. Traditional uses of clove oil include use in dental care as an antiseptic and analgesic, where the undiluted oil may be rubbed on the gums to treat toothache. Clove essential oils are also used as flavoring agents and antimicrobial materials in food and alcoholic and soft drinks and in cosmetic products. Clove bud oil is a yellowish to brown, clear, mobile, sometimes slightly viscous liquid which has an intense spicy and aromatic odor, reminding of fresh crushed cloves.
