ABSTRACT
Clove stem oil is the essential oil obtained from the stem of the clove, Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Clove stem oil is a yellowish to light brown, clear mobile, sometimes slightly viscous liquid which has a spicy, aromatic odor, reminding of fresh crushed cloves. The yield of essential oil from the stem of Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & L.M. Perry generally varies from 5 to 10%. The main producing countries of this oil are Madagascar, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and India. In clove stem oils from various origins over 35 chemicals have been identified. About 73% of these were found in a single reviewed publication only; this high percentage may partly be explained by the low number of analytical studies performed. Articles on contact allergy to clove oil specified to be clove stem oil have not been found.
