ABSTRACT

Most coriander oils are prepared from the ripe dried fruits of the coriander, Coriandrum sativum L. Coriander fruit oil is the essential oil obtained from the fruit of the coriander, Coriandrum sativum L. The fruit is often termed seed, but they are not synonymous: the seeds are contained within the ripe fruits. In literature on contact allergy to coriander oil, both the terms coriander oil and coriander seed oil are used; also in the latter publication, however, the essential oil is meant, not the fixed oil, which is very unlikely to cause allergic reactions. The coriander is commonly used as a condiment or spice in the Mediterranean area, as a flavoring agent in food, in perfumes, cosmetics and pharmaceutical preparations. Coriander fruit essential oil, obtained by steam distillation of the ripe fruits containing seeds, is included among the 20 major essential oils in the world market.
