ABSTRACT

Dwarf pine oil is the essential oil obtained from needles with twigs of the mountain pine, Pinus mugo Turra. Dwarf pine oil is a clear and transparent, mobile liquid which has a discreet green, slightly fatty odor with terpenicbackground. The yield of essential oil from the twigs with needles of Pinus mugo Turra generally varies from 0.12 to 0.8%. Contact allergy to/allergic contact dermatitis from dwarf pine oil has been reported in a few publications only. In groups of consecutive patients suspected of contact dermatitis, prevalence rates of up to 0.7% positive patch test reactions have been observed, but relevance data are lacking. Between 1998 and 2000, dwarf pine oil 2% in petrolatum was tested in 1606 consecutive patient suspected of contact dermatitis in few European countries and there were 12 positive patch test reactions. The relevance was not specified in either study.
