ABSTRACT

Eucalyptus globulus oil is the essential oil obtained from the leaves and terminal branches of the blue gum, Eucalyptus globulus Labill. Eucalyptus globulus is a tall, evergreen tree native to Tasmania and Victoria (Australia). It has been widely planted in temperate South America, China and sub-Saharan Africa. Vast plantations have been established in southern Australia, Spain, Chile and elsewhere, notably for paper pulp and timber production. The leaves of Eucalyptus globulus are the principal sources of eucalyptus oil. Essential oils from Eucalyptus exhibit antibacterial, antifungal, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and insecticide properties. The oil is medicinally used as a decongestant for treating catarrh, bronchitis, sore throat and influenza, but may also be employed in the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis, diabetes and asthma. Eucalyptus globulus oil is a mobile, colorless to pale yellow colored liquid which has a fresh, aromatic, and minty odor.
