ABSTRACT

Ginger oil is the essential oil obtained from the rhizomes of the ginger, Zingiber officinale Roscoe.Zingiber officinale is a tropical herbaceous plant, possibly native to India. It is widely grown as a commercial crop in south and south east Asia, tropical Africa Latin America, the Caribbean and Australia. Zingiber officinale is best known as the source of the pungent, aromatic spice called ginger, produced from the knotted and branched rhizome, which is used to add flavor in cooking. Crude or processed ginger has been reported to exhibit antiinflammatory, antipyretic, antiemetic, anti-tumor, analgesic, hepatoprotective, hypotensive, antioxidant, anti-hemorrhagic, anti-rheumatic, antifungal and antibacterial activities. Ginger essential oil is used to flavor ginger beer and ginger ale, and is commonly used as an ingredient in perfumery, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, including in topical applications as an analgesic. Ginger oil is a pale yellow to amber, clear mobile liquid which has a spicy, fresh citrusy and peppery odor.
