ABSTRACT

Hyssopus officinalis L. is an aromatic perennial subshrub belonging to the Lamiaceae family. The dried flowering shoots of Hyssopus officinalis L. are used in folk medicine for the treatment of chronic coughing, laryngitis, bronchitis, wound infections, digestive disorders and to relieve catarrh. The leaves and flowering tops produce a pleasant smelling essential oil responsible for most of the biological activities of the plant. The oil is used for flavoring and food preservation, in liqueurs, cosmetic products, in perfumery, in the pharmaceutical field in several antiseptic preparations and for phytotherapeutic uses in folk medicine and aromatherapy. The oil is claimed to possess antibacterial, antimycotic, antiviral, anti-tuberculosis, antioxidant, anthelmintic and muscle-relaxing properties. Hyssop oil is a pale yellow to brownish yellow clear mobile liquid, which has an herbaceous, fresh minty and camphoraceous odor. Most oils from Hyssopus officinalis are dominated by isopinocamphone or pinocamphone.
