ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses lavandin oils from cultivars other than ‘Grosso’ and ‘Abrial’ and from oils obtained from lavandins of unspecified cultivars. Lavandin oil is a colorless to slightly yellow, clear mobile liquid which has a floral, fresh lavender-like or herbal fresh camphoraceous odor, depending on the type of lavandin used to prepare the oil. The yield of essential oil from the flowering tops of Lavandula angustifolia Mill. x Lavandula latifolia Medik. generally varies from 1.5 to 5.5 per cent. The main producing countries of this oil are France, Russia, South Africa, Hungary and India. Contact allergy to lavandin oil has been reported in two publications and there is one case report of possible allergic contact dermatitis. An aromatherapist had non-occupational contact dermatitis with allergies to multiple essential oils used at work, including lavandin oil.
