ABSTRACT

Citrus limon (L.) Burm. f. is a small evergreen tree that produces ellipsoidal yellow fruit, the lemon. The origin of the lemon tree is unknown, likely south China and Myanmar. It is cultivated in many subtropical countries. Lemon juice has many applications in food and beverages, serves cosmetic, pharmaceutical and several technical purposes, is exploited as a source of vitamin C, pectin, and enzymes and may be used for cleaning. Lemon juice is said to be useful for rheumatic affections and pain, cough, dyspepsia, vomiting, some forms of headache, sore throat and bleeding from the nose. Lemon oil is a pale yellow to dark green, clear mobile liquid, sometimes cloudy at lower temperature, which has a fresh citrusy green peel note odor. Lemon oil is typically obtained from lemon peel by cold pressing, and it may then be subjected to distillaion and other processing steps in order to isolate, purify and refine the oil.
