ABSTRACT

Patchouli oil is the essential oil obtained from the leaves of the patchouli plant, Pogostemon cablin Benth. Patchouli oil, the essential oil obtained by steam distillation of the dried leaves of Pogostemon cablin, is one of the best fixatives for heavy perfumes. Patchouli essential oil is also used in incense, and for flavoring tobacco, chewing gum, beverages, frozen dry desserts, candy, baked goods, gelatin, and meat and meat products. It is equally employed in scented industrial products such as paper towels, laundry detergents and air fresheners. Patchouli oil Is perceived to have antidepressant, antiphlogistic, antiseptic, aphrodisiac, astringent, deodorant, diuretic, febrifuge, fungicide, insecticide, sedative, tonic, and euphoric properties. Patchouli oil is a mobile to highly viscose liquid, which has a woody, earthy, slightly camphoraceous and balsamic odor. The main producing countries of this oil are Indonesia, Madagascar, India, China and Brazil.
