ABSTRACT

Tangerine oil is a yellowish orange to deep orange, clear mobile liquid which has a fresh juicy, citrusy peel note odor. The yield of essential oil from the peel of Citrus tangerina Hort. ex Tan. generally varies from 0.4 to 0.8 per cent, depending on the dryness of the fruit. Cold-pressed Citrus essential oils consist of a volatile fraction, which represents 85-99% of the oil, and a nonvolatile fraction 1-15%, which mainly contains oxygen heterocyclic compounds, especially coumarins, psoralens and polymethoxyflavones. Allergic contact dermatitis from tangerine oil has been reported in one publication only. One patient developed allergic contact dermatitis from a perfume; all (coded) ingredients were tested, and there were strongly positive patch test reactions to tangerine oil 2% and 10% in petrolatum only.
