ABSTRACT

Valerian oil is the essential oil obtained from the rhizomes and roots of the valerian, Valeriana officinalis L. The valerians are highly respected medicinal plants listed in many Pharmacopoeias. It is generally adopted, though unproven, that the whole mixture of these components is responsible for the pharmacological activity of the valerian. The highest contents of valerenic acids and essential oil may be located in the adventitious roots, followed by the lateral roots and the rhizomes. Valerian roots and their isolates are employed in folk medicine, modern phytotherapy and aromatherapy, but also as official drugs. The Valerianae radix is often perceived as a milder alternative or a possible substitute for the stronger synthetic sedatives in the treatment of states of nervous excitation and anxiety-induced sleep disturbances. Contact allergy to and possible allergic contact dermatitis from valerian oil has been reported in one publication only.
